in the daze of these days

there's a querying and a quarrying

a striving and a strutting

and an enormous expenditure

directed to the far away

and the long past

in the hope of finding answers

to fundamental questions.

The questions in the context posed

being misguided alas misfire

thus sending the search

(after bombast and blast-off)

to most inappropriate places.

In broad daylight benighted;

truly wrong as wrong can be.

RIDING WITH THE PANAMA KID

So now it's done. Final title: The Righteous Mission of the Panama Kid. Just a little short story. Short, yeah, short—but it took a helluva long 57 years to arrive! I printed the thing out, and just to get an outside opinion, I foisted it on a friend. And she liked it. She praised it—not as high as the skies but high enough. Glory be! But then, what made my helium heart sink was her smiling, exuberant request to hear more of the Kid's exploits. "A series or something like that." Of course, I had an inkling about that but I honestly hoped to avoid any big undertaking.

Not everybody's got a sister. Nor one like mine. So to have one like Rina is to be double-blessed (at the very least). Her name, unique and musical, was snipped off "Caterina" which was our grandmother's, Dad's mother's, name. Giving my sister that abbreviated version was my parent's attempt to honor our Italian past and point to our American future.
